Building a Regenerative Future with Declare

Over the past decade, sustainability-focused certifications have reshaped how we approach architecture, infrastructure, and lighting. Programs like LEED, WELL, SITES, FitWell, Green Globes, CHPS, and the Living Building Challenge are guiding the industry toward smarter, healthier, and more responsible design.

What Is the Living Building Challenge?

Created by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI), the Living Building Challenge (LBC) is a bold framework for regenerative design. It’s not just a certification—it’s a mindset that encourages buildings to give back more than they take.

The LBC evolves through collaboration and feedback, and it challenges every stakeholder to view design and construction as a chance to create lasting, positive change. Projects must meet net-zero standards for energy, water, and waste—making them among the most sustainable buildings in the world.

The Seven Petals: A Holistic Approach to Sustainability

The Living Building Challenge is organized into seven performance categories, known as Petals:

  • Responsible Site Design
  • Water Stewardship
  • Energy Independence
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Transparent Materials
  • Social Equity
  • Inspired Beauty

Each Petal includes specific Imperatives that guide teams toward regenerative outcomes across new builds and renovations.

Declare Label: Transparency in Materials

Within the Materials Petal lies the Declare label—a powerful tool for product transparency. Declare acts like a nutrition label for building materials, offering clear insight into what’s inside the products we specify.

This voluntary disclosure program helps eliminate harmful substances and encourages manufacturers to embrace responsible sourcing and production practices.

How to read the Declare Label

Declare labels list all ingredients present at or above 100 parts per million (0.01%) in the final product. Each component is identified by its chemical name, CAS number, and concentration range.

Lighting products are increasingly represented in the Declare database, alongside flooring, furniture, and finishes—making it easier than ever to specify safe, sustainable materials.

Understanding Declaration Status

Each Declare label includes a Declaration Status that reflects the product’s compliance with the LBC Red List:

  • Red List Free: No Red List chemicals; full ingredient disclosure

  • Red List Approved: Nearly full disclosure with approved exceptions

  • Declared: Full disclosure, but includes Red List chemicals without exceptions

The Declare Database: A Resource for Specifiers

The Declare database is a free, searchable platform that helps designers and specifiers find products aligned with their sustainability goals. Users can filter by product type, manufacturer, and certification status—and connect directly with manufacturers.

At LINX Lighting + Controls, we support the use of Declare-labeled products and encourage our partners to explore the database as part of their specification process. Transparency and accountability are key to building a better future.

The Simplest Solution to Control Exterior Lighting

At LINX Lighting + Controls, we pride ourselves on connecting our customers to the most innovative lighting solutions available. Today, we’re excited to share a breakthrough that solves one of the most persistent challenges in our industry: integrating indoor and outdoor lighting control into a single, seamless platform.

Thanks to a powerful collaboration between two of our trusted manufacturing partners—Lutron and Synapse Wireless—this challenge has a solution.

One Problem, One Unified Solution

For years, facility managers, building owners, and designers have struggled with having to manage separate control systems for interior and exterior lighting. The result? Inefficiency, inconsistent performance, and unnecessary complexity.

With the integration of Lutron’s Athena system with Synapse’s SimplySnap platform—a solution that finally brings indoor and outdoor lighting together under one roof.

This is more than a product update. It’s a transformation.

The Lutron + Synapse Integration: What It Is

SimplySnap by Synapse Wireless is a robust, wireless outdoor lighting control platform designed to optimize the performance and energy savings of exterior LED systems. It shines in parking lots, parking garages, and site/area lighting, offering precise control and detailed performance data.

Together, these systems now communicate through API integration, delivering a single point of control for both indoor and outdoor lighting.

How It Works: A Seamless User Experience

The integration connects SimplySnap with Athena through Lutron’s cloud-based architecture. That means:

  • Outdoor lighting can now be controlled via the Lutron app, the Timeclock feature, or even Lutron’s Pico remote.

  • SimplySnap provides real-time feedback on fixture status and dimming levels.

  • Users get a single, unified interface to monitor and manage their entire lighting ecosystem—indoors and out.

This is lighting control, streamlined.

Ideal Applications: Where This Solution Shines

This integration is especially beneficial for interior lighting projects that include adjacent outdoor environments, such as:

  • Parking garages

  • Parking lots

  • Outdoor site and area lighting

Whether it’s a corporate campus, hospital, university, or mixed-use development, customers can now enjoy seamless control and monitoring across their entire property—with no need to jump between systems.

Why It Matters — And Why LINX Is Excited

At LINX, our mission is to help our customers achieve smarter, more efficient, and more beautiful lighting environments. We’ve heard the pain points of trying to unify indoor and outdoor systems, and we’ve advocated for better integration.

Now, Lutron and Synapse have delivered—and we’re proud to be the bridge bringing this innovation to our customers.

This collaboration isn’t just about convenience—it’s about maximizing your investment, simplifying system management, and future-proofing your properties.

Pacific Amphitheater Glows Brighter with Wireless RGBW Upgrade

The Pacific Amphitheater is a high-profile outdoor venue at the OC Fairgrounds that recently underwent a series of upgrades, including the need for a visually impactful lighting retrofit. The goal was to illuminate the full height of the iconic entrance pillars, ensuring vibrant, even coverage
with RGBW color-changing capability.

However, this posed two key challenges:

1. High Output Requirement: The façade of the pillars is tall and wide, requiring a fixture with strong vertical reach and consistent color saturation.

2. Wireless Control Necessity: Due to the retrofit nature of the project, running new data conduit under existing asphalt was not feasible, necessitating a robust wireless control system.

Initial attempts using products from Diode LED fell short—mock-ups showed insufficient throw and uneven coverage. Even after multiple iterations, the solution failed to meet the project’s visual and technical expectations.

The Solution:

The team transitioned to using ColorBlast fixtures from Color Kinetics, a choice driven by the fixture’s high-output RGBW capabilities and proven performance in architectural lighting applications. After completing a live mock-up on one of the pillar faces, the solution checked all the client’s requirements:

• Superior Reach: Able to effectively light the entire height of the façade.

• Even Color Distribution: Delivered uniform lighting with rich saturation.

• Reliable Wireless Control: Enabled via Pharos wireless controllers, eliminating the need for additional conduit or data cable installation. significantly enhancing the guest experience and brand presentation.

The Result:

With the expertise of LINX Lighting + Controls and City Electric Supply, the upgraded lighting has transformed the Pacific Amphitheater’s entrance into a vibrant, programmable focal point. Now fully equipped with high-output RGBW lighting, the pillars are not only visually striking but also highly versatile. Thanks to the Pharos wireless control system, color schemes can be easily customized to match event themes or sponsor branding.

This capability is especially valuable as the space is now sponsored by Yaamava’ Casino and Toyota—two prominent partners who will be using branded signage on the pillars. The new lighting system allows the venue to adapt to each sponsor or event with dynamic color changes, significantly enhancing the guest experience and brand presentation.

Next-Gen Tech for Lighting Designers

BioUp: Designed for circadian responses

Genlyte Solutions invests millions in technology development — constantly driven to do better and deliver more innovative solutions. Below we’ve done a deep dive into three game-changing technologies lighting designers can’t ignore…

Our lives have profoundly changed over the last few years. While some trends have been fleeting, one that has continued is that people are spending more time indoors than ever before.

And the more time we spend indoors, the less likely it is that we are exposing ourselves to sufficient daylight. We often forget how important natural light is – it can affect our mood, energy levels, productivity and sleep. The exposure to the natural light-dark cycle gives our biological clocks the essential time cues we need to feel well and perform well.

Most indoor light emits only visual levels of light. With the right technology, we can mimic natural day cycles to bring the non-visual impact of lighting indoors, supporting occupant wellbeing.

BioUp gives a cyan-boost to the LED spectrum to deliver circadian benefits simulating near perfect daylight (daylight=1).

Recommended for application areas occupied during the day including offices, schools, and healthcare facilities.
